Nicole’s Story

Nicole had come to my office for a metabolic consultation. She was incredibly frustrated.

Nicole had adopted a low Carb lifestyle, enlisted in an elite Cross Fit program and was on a regiment of high end “fat burning” supplements for the past 16 months had only experienced a worsening of her mental & metabolic state. In the hope of losing her post-baby fat, peri-menopausal weight gain, depression, and the chronic pain and stiffness of fibromyalgia she invested in a low carb high-intensity exercise regiment.

In some cruel twist of fate, all her efforts had resulted in the exact opposite of her desired results…Nicole actual gain weight and felt worse than ever. Her systemic joint and muscle pain she had to stop her exercise routine entirely … which lead to even more weight gain!

What was worse, the low carb diet had work amazingly well for her best friend. HUH?

What I told her was a scary accurate interpretation of her current mental and metabolic state while being simultaneously worthless to Nicole. In our MBC program, we use a metabolic algorithm we call The Metabolic Mirror to assess all our new clients. The “Mirror” without the need for invasive or expensive genetic testing had revealed the reasons Nicole did not respond to the current metabolic path she was on. However, the method the information was presented was completely worthless to Nicole. For it did not translate into specific real-life applications which Nicole could than implement to break free from the metabolic prison she was currently locked in. Whether you are battling hardcore hormonal body fat fused to your belly and butt or fighting for your life against an aggressive carcinoma on of the most important concepts I can share with you is…It is the soil, not the seed that decides the flavor of the fruit. The soil is our brain and body tissues. The seed is our DNA. The fruit is our life. We do not have control over the seed that was past to us from our parents.

We do have control over the conditions found in the soil. Blood sugar levels, heart rate, tissue acid levels, levels of neurotransmitter in our brains all can be modified to enhance or suppress the version of self-described above. Genetic research is uncovering the fact that our genetics are not destinies but rather tendencies which can be greatly influenced by epigenetic factors and our daily choice.

I was born with a certain brain type. I developed a certain metabolic type. There were epigenetic womb wounds that occurred to me during my development. There are internal and external variables that can trigger cancer, dementia, heart disease or obesity in me but maybe not in you. These Triggers are different for each person that is why you must first look into your own Metabolic Mirror and discover your specific type(brain, metabolic, enzymatic), triggers, traps, and treasures.

There are also internal and external treasures that can take me from these less than optimal versions moving me towards the more optimum, radiant me. So how do we decipher all of these variables? How do we discover what brain type we are? What food type works best for us? Are we a constipated Accumulator or a drained Dumper? And more importantly, how can we make mental and metabolic adjustments in accordance with these findings to release the radiant energetic lean angel trapped within this block of toxic lard?

How do we discover what type of enzymatic engine we have been given which allows us to use specific food types to generate large amounts of energy which in-turn increases our lean body mass allowing us to near effortlessly melt off body fat off?

I have been called a genius by my peers. I have been told that “I walk on water” by patients who have mistakenly attributed their healing to something I had conjured. Some even have gone to referring to me as The Metabolic Moses. WOW..have I got them all fooled! Let me introduce you to exactly how pathetic I actually am and how this degree of weakness should inspire you. Oh, and the only water I walk on is when in miss the toilet and pee all over the floor.

I hide under the bed sheets eating raw cookie dough. I will bring my kids under there with me as we knaw on our sticks of raw high fructose corn syrup like a brood of demented mice hiding from the monster we call MOTHER. I have absolutely no willpower and have an extremely impulsive and very addicted brain type… I revel in my patheticness… so how is it that I am 8% body fat, take no meds, bench press 300 + as I proceed through the 6th decade of my so-called life.

Great genetics right not quite…Alzheimer’s, aneurysms, arthritis, alcoholism all “run” in my family and that’s only the A’s. So how is it that I am able to manifest the radiant, lean, amazing version of me without many disciplines, effort, or dedication. Easy…I apply the concepts I am sharing with you in The No-Brainer diet for only three of the seven days of my week.

The Ugly truth about our ” self”

The “you” and “me” of consciousness is a difficult subject to approach. To my deep thinking secular friends upon reflection, they see our consciousness as an energy or force being generated by our brains. To my spiritual brothers and sisters, they view their consciousness as a soul or spirit which is being housed or stored in the brain like battery stores electrons. So is the brain a generator or a battery…the answer makes one hell of a difference. Get it??? Sorry I had to go there! That is the extent of my theology that I will afflict you with.

Stop using your consciousness to make your metabolic decisions during the day. Here’s why “we” can’t be trusted:

  1. 50% of what we believe is wrong. On one of my first days of post-graduate school orientation, one of our deans repeated the well-known warning that many physicians receive: “Fifty percent of the material we will teach you will be wrong after you graduate. The problem is, we don’t know which 50%.”
  2. Coffee is made from a bean. No, it is made from a seed.
    Eve gave Adam an apple. No. The scripture never mentions the type of fruit…. more likely it was a pomegranate.
    Bulls are enraging by the color red. Bulls can’t see red. They are enraging by the movement.
    Tomatoes are a vegetable. No, they are a citrus fruit.
    Peanuts are a nut. No, they are a legume.
    The capital of Australia is Sydney. No, it’s Canberra.
    Frankenstein was the name of Mary Shelly’s monster. No, the monster had no name.

(insert more support research identifying the inaccuracy of data stored within the human brain.)

2. You’re not alone in there…Ancestral Echoes taint our reality

Mini, the mouse was given her favorite fruit. A noxious gas was released into her cage as she enjoyed the fruit. The gas made her extremely ill. The experiment was repeated a number of times. As you would expect just the site of the fruit began to repulse Mini. Classic operant condition. Now here’s the twist. Mini had babies. Her babies were never exposed to the gas or the experiment their mother was subjected to.

When shown the same fruit they to became ill, fearful, and repulsed by it. How does a fruit, to the mice would be classified instinctual as the perfect food become the object of vile repulsion? The story continues. These mice have babies and these babies are also repulsed by the same fruit. It wasn’t until we reach the third generation that the baby mice lost this fear and repulsion and return to enjoying the fruit. Can intense memory of an event(s) manifest as a physical change in the brain? If the answer is “Yes” can this new physical characteristic be passed genetically to the offspring?

It will soon be discovered that our consciousness has been tainted by an Ancestral influence which has left behind a cognitive footprint of pre-framed prejudice, blind spots, and an internal dialog which resonates only with those “like” itself and innately fears & rejects those that are not “like” self.A study at University College London in the UK has found that left-brain dominant types have larger amygdalas than those of the right-brained tribe. Amygdala is responsible for fear and other “primitive” emotions. At the same time, left-brained were also found to have a smaller anterior cingulate — the part of the brain responsible for courage and optimism.
“It is very significant because it does suggest there is something about political attitudes that are either encoded in our brain structure through our experience or that our brain structure in some way determines or results in our political attitudes,” Geraint Rees, the neurologist who carried out the study, told the media.

3.Our Consciousness Caves! The one thing that we can all agree upon is that our conscious effort is exactly that and effort which expends energy and falls short more commonly than not. So why rely on something that is going to eventually fail you? In the No Brainer diet, I will ask you to disengage your consciousness and learn to rely on your innate autonomic nervous-enteric system which to save time we will call your Secret Weapon.

A Deeper Understanding…

There are no streams of consciousness observable on functional MRI. The conscious “us” tends to pool in our prefrontal lobes right up in the front of the brain. At MBC we call this region of the brain the Gate Keeper. From our perch, up front, we try to control the powerful and intrinsically dark deeper regions of our brain I will refer to as MOMMA. You will meet MOMMA in a moment.

My Theory: The GateKeeper

Close your eyes and picture volleyball with a baseball catcher’s mask strapped snuggly to it. Keep that image in your mind’s eye. The catcher’s mask is what I will be referring to as our Gatekeeper, which to my brain science friends would be called our prefrontal lobe. Like a catcher mask which protects us from external projectiles hurling at our skulls at high velocity our Gatekeeper attempts to protect us from the massive data downloading from both our internal and external environment.
Our amazing brains can process 4000 bits of information per second, respectable, until you realize that our external environment amplified by social media and the web is hurling 400,000 bits of information per second at our skulls with malicious intent not to mention that for every one impulse our brains throws at our bodies our bodies throw 10 right back at it. Without our Gatekeeper our brain would be overwhelmed by all this information. Another way of thinking of our prefrontal lobes is that they act like spam-filters screening out the irrelevant information and allowing in only the clean, relevant bits of information. That’s how it is supposed to work away.

Those, liked me, that are afflicted with autism, ADD, OC, or ADHD have challenges with their Gatekeeper’s ability to screen out irrelevant data making it nearly impossible for us to focus on the current project at hand. Image trying to drink out of a fire hydrant at full blast.
Keep the image of our brains as volleyballs with catcher’s masks in mind. In baseball, the catcher’s mask prevents things from coming in from the external environment but in a brain, that same masks also keeps things from flying out of our deeper brain centers at inopportune times. The primary functions of our Gatekeeper is to house our consciousness and

1.Allows us to tolerate our world, like bubble wrap for the brain: creates and sustained a Spam filter for both the external and internal world
2. Controls and monitors thought life: the scripture reference of place every thought into captivity was referring to this region of our brains
3. Conceals the “real” us from the rest of the world

Time is Ticking
The prefrontal lobe of every human being is quickly dissolving. This lobe is in the front of our brain and acts as a spam filter on the external stimuli. This is where the “you” of you and the “me” of me live and breath. Some call it the seat of the soul…At MyMBC we call it the GateKeeperOn the flip side, literally, this lobe of the brain acts like a mask concealing the “real” me and you from the world. As we age our ability to tolerate the external world is reduced and the true us is exposed to the outside world. Scary. Even scary is the fact that 85% of all cerebral accidents (strokes, emboli, aneurysms) strike this region of our brain! 85%! One way or the other our mask is going to be ripped off our brains and the real you and me is going to be exposed to the outside world.

What is the one first sign of early-onset dementia? A positive finding on the MBC MIRROR MARCHING TEST. What is the next sign of accelerated dementia? Disrupted metabolic sleep patterns and the inability to dream. What region of the brain is most affected by this terrible disorder? Unfortunately for “us” it is the Gatekeeper! Which then allows MOMMA to be let off her leash and express her deep dark instinctual desires without being encumbered by any moral standards, code of ethics, or spiritual compass. So who is this MOMMA?

Meet MOMMA…The Deeper Brain Centers

Have you ever watch yourself do something you know was wrong….like eating a whole role of uncooked cookie dough or knocking our an entire row of Orea cookies( forget the row I’ve eliminated the entire package! Consciously we knew this was destructive but we were driven by unseen forces against our will to perform such a godly act….let me introduce you to MOMMA.

You have heard that “we” use only 10% percent of our brains….and we have this underlying assumption that someday we will evolve to use the other 90% and become some sort of cerebral god….wrong McFly…ain’t going to happen. The 90% of the brain we don’t have direct access to is the hardware internal workings I like to call MOMMA and

“When Momma ain’t happy…NOBODY HAPPY!”

Ever go on a low carb diet and then found yourself eating an entire bay of potato chips…..Momma ain’t happy. Ever start a Cross Fit program and found yourself instead in the Dairy Queen drive through. Momma ain’t happy.

There is more to this story. Behind this mask, this spam filter our Gatekeeper is MOMMA or the deeper more impulsive regions of the brain that we try to control through conscious efforting of discipline, willpower, and moral code.

MOMMA when working in a harmonic symphony will allow us to experience an amazing clarity, HD cognitive processing with a hyper-fast download. When let off the chain Momma makes a mess.

The harmonic symphony which should be occurring between MOMMA and ‘US” deteriorates quickly into cerebral torment when one or more centers begin to dominate the others causing a cascading deterioration of the cerebral environment. Picture these brain centers like a crown with 12 gems buried within our brain tissue.

Each center has specialized neurons created to receive and react to specific types of stimuli.
Fear, Appetite, Pain, Pleasure, Fantasy, Faith, are just a few of these powerful neuronal centers. It is in our nature to label things bad or good. The more a current is run through a region of our brains the bigger and more influential these cells become in our intracranial world. Think of it this way: Picture your computer screen. Picture the icons on the screen that you click on to activate the underlying software.
Now if your computer was set up like your brain the icons you used more commonly would slightly enlarge with every click and the icons you never used would grow slightly smaller as time goes on. Eventually, your brain screen would begin to look something like this.

Here is the major problem. Unlike your computer, these brain centers begin to dominate the internal workings of the overall brain function leading to a desynchronized, dysfunctional system. Now let’s take this theory and apply it to a real human life. Example: Small child witnessing a terrible act of spousal abuse. Audio (vulgarity, screaming), visual (witnessing physical abuse), emotional (pain of watching the mother she loves brutalized). Her pain center and fear center would receive tremendous amounts of current leading to regional neuronal hypertrophy (overgrowth).

These centers begin to dominate the other centers. As she ages and her mask begins to dissolve her dominate center become more and more apparent to her and the world. Like a car alarm with its sensors turn to such a sensitivity it goes off when the wind blows she begins to react to pedestrian level pain (example head pain) which to her brain actually feels like a debilitating migraine.

She must address the progressing cerebral disruption by self- treatment. Most patients will attempt to calm their cerebral turmoil by applying a numbing agent standardly they start with a sugar-based substance then progressing to alcohol. (Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker)

Ironically, this choice of treatment actually accelerates the dissolving process of their prefrontal lobe, The more damage to the prefrontal lobe the less tolerant she will be to both internal and external stimuli which unfortunately feeds her dominate brain centers to an even greater degree. When you wake up, it’s OK to go to the bathroom before the measurement if it helps you to relax. Clear away all distractions, like music, and do not speak or be spoken to during the measurement.

It’s best to measure your resting heart rate in the morning, right after you wake up.

You should do the measurement more than once, preferably on consecutive mornings so that you get a baseline for your resting heart rate.

I will send you a Bio tracker chart to place on your bathroom mirror so you can begin to record your data allowing you to identify patterns and problems.

Now that you have your baseline heart rate let’s use it to assess your autonomic nervous response to certain foods. We are looking for the earliest evidence of what physicians call the autonomic threat response or what you may have heard called the fight or flight response. This happens super fast in some cases. So be ready. Take your heart rate before you begin to eat the food you will be evaluating. Take another reading within a 30 seconds after beginning to eat the meal. yes, it can happen that quickly. Your autonomic nervous does not have to wait until the food has been completely digested to assess it as friend or foe. Take another ready a15 minute after you have finished the meal.

Rule of Assessment

Three things can happen: Your heart rate goes up after

you have eaten the meal. Your heart rate stays the same after you have eaten the meal. Your heart rate goes down after you have eaten the meal.

If your heart rate drops by more then 5 beats after eating a meal you have identified a potential “trap”. A trap is defined as any substances or activity that can lead your brain into developing a pathological relationship with that entity. Addiction or obsessive-compulsive behaviors can develop quickly when a “trap” has been activated

If your heart rate elevates by more than 5 points this indicates you have identified a “trigger”. A trigger is defined as any substances or activity that leads to an aggressive activation of the “fight or flight’ response of your autonomic nervous system. Your body has identified the substance as a poison is responding by activating your threat response systems. NOT GOOD!

If your heart rate stays the same you have identified a substance that your body assimilates well and is comfortable with.

Step two: Become aware of your Weight Flux…

In the No Brainer diet, we weigh daily but we look your weight very differently than the standard physician. We are looking for marked shifts in your weight which I claim is evidence of the activation of your autonomic nervous systems threat response mechanism. When your neuro-metabolic mechanism is firing on all cylinders you should gain less than 2 pounds during the day and you should be able to lose 3 pounds of weight at night. Let’s find out how well you are doing by tracing your weight flux throughout a 24 hour period of time.

When your neuro-metabolic mechanism is hitting on all cylinders you will have a consistent net loss of weight as you progress through your week. Here is what the chart looks like when one of our MBC clients is hitting their metabolic stride:

Here is unfortunately what actually happens for most of our clients prior to activating their own secret weapon: Age, stress, and hormonal havoc, not calories, are the factors effecting most of clients weight gain challenges.

Now take a closer look.Notice there is absolutely no weight loss at night for them prior to the program and a net increase in their weigh as they proceed through their busy weekly schedules. This insidious weight accumulation can lead to disastrous consequences for both our mental and metabolic health.

Step 3: If you are bloating you are fat coating

Time to pull out the bike shorts. Most of my clients have had the majority of their stretch receptors torn apart in their stomach lining due to babies, C -sections, chronic bowel inflammation from gluten sensitivities or if you are like me too many 7 dollar buffet line bonanzas. Without these receptors online we only experience a sense of physical fullness when we find ourselves with a massive food baby in our bellies. Too late by then. In response to the bloat, our brains cause a cascade of steroids to saturate the inflamed stomach lining and in the attempt to put out the fire we end up putting on a ton of mid-line body fat. Say this with me: ” When we are bloating you are fat coating!”

So our biofeedback mechanism regarding stomach satiety and fullness is broken we can fix it by wearing snug fitting elastic undergarments…. not the turn of the century torture devices we once called corsets ladies. With these “pants of eternal truth” as some of, my clients have decided to call them we get immediate feedback on substances we have consumed and their effects on our digestive tract.

Case Study Number One: My Eye cream was making me fat!

Hi! This happened to me last week. I was given some eye cream that was supposed to make the circles under my eyes permanently disappear. I tried it for two days. I felt itchiness to the point that I wanted to scratch out my eyes! Also, I gained 4 pounds. I could not drop it off for days afterward. I stopped using the cream after 2 days, but it took several days before the weight gain subsided! Evidence that your Secret Weapon is online and firing fine…

Mesomorph: for our discussion, this is a female that can deadlift greater than 250 lbs or a male that can bench press more than 300 lbs.

Female 5 foot 7 or taller your weight is no greater than 145 lbs.( mesomorphs excluded)

Females below 5 foot 7 inches tall your weight is no greater than 125 lbs.

Males 6- 6’4 your weight is no greater than 199 lbs. (Mesomorphs excluded)

Males below 6 foot your weight is no greater than 180 lbs.( Mesomorphs excluded)

Average resting heart rate should be in the high 50s to low 60s (58-63 BPM) to maintain lean body status.

You should not put more than two pounds of weight on during the day.

You should lose at least 2.5 pounds of body weight every night.

Post pyramidal (after meal) heart rate should not vary by more than a few points +- 2 BPM.

An increase in heart rate by 5 or more points indicates a trigger(obesogen) has been tripped.

A decrease in heart rate by 5 or more points indicates a trap(addiction) has been triggered.

Common Triggers & Treasures discovers by others who are using the No Brainer Approach to dieting..

an environment of chronic agitation. In this state never-ending un-ease our brains and bodies become deficient in a calming neurotransmitter crucial for both our mental and metabolic health….GABA.

One of your most important treasures will be the daily consumption of the amino acid GABA and foods that are high in GABA content.

One of your most notorious triggers leading to both mental and metabolic chaos would be substances commonly found in our foods that elevate glutamic acid levels. High levels of Glutamic acid levels high can and will cause brain damage, seizure activity, mental and metabolic agitation, and eventually early onset dementia. The triggers you must avoid are foods that are high in glutamic acid levels, foods and substances that lower your GABA levels, and foods that use the modifiers MSG and aspartame, both linked to elevating glutamic acid levels. Both aspartic acid & glutamic acid (the two amino acids having 2 carboxyl groups — the “acidic amino acids”) have the capacity for destroying neurons when released in excessive amounts (although calcium seems to be more of a cause than acidity). Monosodium glutamate (MSG), a major component of soya sauce, has been shown to destroy nerve cells when fed to young animals. Insofar as glutamate does not normally cross the blood-brain barrier, it is open to question whether this is relevant to a human adult. Increased alertness (or anxiety) due to caffeine may be mainly due to blockage of adenosine receptors which normally inhibit glutamate release.

Here’s a list of foods that are extraordinarily high in glutamic acid levels and should be avoided at all cost. Here is a list of foods that are high in GABA content and should be eaten on a daily basis. Here’s a list of substances that have been shown clinically to lower your GABA levels. Here’s a list of foods and products that use either MSG or aspartame in their constituents.

Foods High in GABA Treasures to be consumed daily:

GABA is created through the process of fermentation. When lactobacillus fermentation conditions are optimal, GABA production by microorganisms is increased. This makes fermented foods the only dietary source of GABA.

Other lactobacillus-fermented foods containing GABA include kefir, miso, sauerkraut, and yogurt.

Foods containing flavonoids that may influence GABA function include berries, citrus fruits, apples, pears, tea, cocoa, and wine. Medicinal plants include
chamomile flowers, feverfew, linden flowers, and passionflower.

Side note for those of with resting heart rates greater than 70: Pu-Erh tea refers to a variety of dark, fermented tea from China’s Yunnan province. Proponents of the tea’s health benefits claim it contains significant amounts of GABA. A study published in a 2011 issue of the Journal of Biomedical Science by Chien-Wei Hou supports this claim. Hou found Pu-Erh tea leaves to contain large amounts of bioactive GABA.

Substances that lower GABA and that should be avoided by those who are gapped:

Caffeine. Yes, that means coffee, energy drinks, chocolate, sodas, and teas with high caffeine content.
